Make a Memory

Rachel and Rebekah at The Grand, December 2013.

My daughters were 10 and 12 when they first visited The Grand America Hotel. They weren’t accustomed to such luxury. Their idea of extravagance had been bowling at Jack & Jill lanes in American Fork, lunch from the grill, and a night at the Super 8 in Lehi because it had a pool.

Administrative responsibilities in the emergency department required me to attend a medical conference at The Grand. Organizers arranged my accommodations. I took Rachel and Rebekah. Before we got to our room, Rachel eyed the crystal light fixture and paneled walls of the elevator, and said, “Dad, I don’t think I can stay at the Super 8 anymore.”

The girls enjoyed every amenity, including plush robes and at least three trips into an oversized jetted marble tub. Their eyes widened when I said, “You guys haven’t ever had room service, have you?” I ridiculously overpaid for a pizza that was far too small, but it was delivered to the room with a mere phone call, and they loved it. We still laugh about it.

My daughters are now married and have kids of their own, but I still take them to brunch at The Grand every Christmas season.

Take time to make memories. Spend a few dollars if you must. It will be worth it.
