I felt Kate’s pain as she spoke about a dark and wrenching time in her life. She’d felt forsaken and alone. The image lodged in her mind was God, in the form of a man, facing away from her. All she could see was his back.

She went to a lightworker, hoping for insights and comfort. In the middle of the session, the lightworker said, “I don’t know why I feel this, but I know it’s important.” She stood up, turned her back to Kate, spread her arms, and continued the session, speaking and listening while facing away.

When they concluded, the lightworker reiterated the importance of what she’d done though she didn’t understand why.

“I know exactly why,” Kate said. “That’s how I’ve felt, like God’s turned his back on me and doesn’t care. You validated my feelings.”

“That’s not how I felt,” the lightworker said with compassion. “To me, it felt as if I was facing the world, with all its struggles and heartaches, with my arms outstretched, protecting you from them.”

Kate walked away with a powerful new feeling about what it means to see God’s back.
