Do It For the Right Reason

I was making the bed. No big deal, right? But I hate making the bed. I was doing it for her. I threw the sheets and covers into their approximate positions and stacked up the pillows. It looked like I’d made it. It didn’t look like she’d made it. I thought, What’s the point? It won’t be up to her standard anyway?

Then I thought again. I don’t care whether the bed is made. I wasn’t doing it for me. If I’m not going to do it to her standard—if I’m not going to do it in such a way as to show her I care—what’s the point? I pulled the pillows off. I straightened the sheets and blankets the way she would do it. I carefully repositioned the pillows. It looked the way she’d want it to look.

If you’re going to do something, do it for the right reason.
