Solo for the First Lady
“When I was 15, I met Elenor Roosevelt and sang a solo for her.”
That’s what my mother recently told me. She played in the Morgan High School band and sang in their chorus.
“What was the solo?” I asked.
“God Bless America,” she said. “In Kingsbury Hall.”
I did a little online research. “The former first lady arrived in Salt Lake City early Monday morning,” the 9 November 1953 Deseret News reported. “The energetic Mrs. Roosevelt . . . spoke to the student body of the University of Utah in Kingsbury Hall.”
In Mom’s 1953/54 yearbook, I found pictures of her in the band, the marching band, the chorus, and the school musical. As it turned out, she’d just turned 16 when the chorus traveled to Salt Lake, and she sang her solo.
You never cease to amaze me, Mom.
