Open Your Gate
Steeped in religion, John’s mother lived her faith whole-souled and without doubt. Her commitment impacted him deeply throughout his childhood.
As a scientist, John tucked his doubts and questions into a metaphorical box and continued attending church. Creationism proved particularly problematic, but he stayed the course.
Five years after she died, John’s mother came to him. Her presence was clear. She communicated without speaking.
“You will . . .” she said, pausing midsentence.
Instantly, John realized he’d anticipated her message, and she’d felt his reluctance. She began again.
“You may find that not everything in our church is true,” she said.
When John told me his experience, I thought, “She was the perfect person to deliver the message.” What impressed me more, however—what I found quite telling—was that she’d paused and adjusted her message to accommodate what he was willing to hear.
Our guides and messengers are often limited by our willingness. If you want to receive more, open your gate and be willing.
