Find Your Vibe

Salt Lake Tabernacle Organ. Image from Wikipedia.

I ambled among the 11,623 pipes of the Salt Lake Tabernacle Organ—literally walked around inside the organ—as it belted out a complex arrangement of a favorite hymn.

The pipes—wood, zinc, and various alloys of tin and lead—ranged from the diameter of a pencil with a speaking length of less than an inch to one measuring more than 35 feet that vibrated at just 16 cycles per second. Some were round, others square. More than 120 dated to the original 1860’s organ. All made their contribution.

From inside, I couldn’t see my friend at the console pulling many of the 147 stops or rapidly shifting his hands between five keyboards or dancing his specialized shoes across the foot pedals, but I’d seen him do it for decades. I could see him in my mind.

I felt the music vibrate through me. I vibrated with it. I opened my mouth and felt the column of air in my trachea vibrate. I modulated a soft hum in my throat until it synchronized with various pipes. For a brief time, I became part of the organ.

Spirit is like that organ, surrounding us, vibrating through us, uniting with us, inviting us to notice and become one.
