The Wounded Angel

What is an angel?

The Wounded Angel, 1903, Hugo Simberg.

Many offer complicated explanations, citing ancient texts to support their views. My view is quite simple.

Angel is another word for the human soul. Some angels haven’t yet come to this realm. Others have already been here. Some exist in human form. Sometimes they come to help; sometimes to receive help.

Angels are deceased loved ones and unborn children, ancient souls and novices, strangers and friends. They come as messengers, guides, tutors, comforters, chasteners, mourners, companions, reflections or awakeners. Their path is ours and ours theirs.

You have been, are, or will be, someone’s angel. Remember that and be kind to your angels. And don’t forget to fly.

Hugo Simberg was recovering from meningitis in 1903 when he painted this image, but he refused to interpret it. He left that to viewers.
